Wale Hudson-Roberts says the Church must be more open about suicide, and reminds us that people who give serious thought to ending their lives include Christians. One of the things I remember most about being a local pastor was the shocking number of attempted and actual suicides, not by congregants, but by those within the local community. Year on year, young and old, male and female, an assortment of hues and ethnicities, so desperate and fed up with their lot, reasoned that death was better than life.
Over the years, a lot of people have shaped my life in many different ways, both positively and negatively. This summer, I met a friend I hadn’t spoken to for over 20 years, and learned how she had turned stumbling blocks into stepping stones; crisis situations into opportunities for ministry, and battles into victory. From her inspirational testimony, I was challenged to grow and change in areas of my life that I had previously been content with.
