John Sentamu to visit JA during Independence Celebrations

The UK’s leading Black Anglican cleric, the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr John Sentamu, will visit Jamaica to kick-start celebrations for the island’s 50th Anniversary of Independence from Britain.

The Archbishop, and his wife Margaret, will spend a week in Jamaica during January, and lead two services: an ecumenical service in Montego Bay, and a special service at the Cathedral in Spanish Town. In addition, the Archbishop will meet leading church ministers, and enjoy the island’s many attractions.

Regional Director of the Jamaica Tourist Board, Elizabeth Fox, said, “2012 marks the start of Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of Independence. Therefore, when planning the official events that will take place throughout the year, the Jamaica Tourist Board considered there to be no better way of launching these celebrations than by way of a visit from the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.

“Jamaicans are deeply religious people, and Jamaica has more churches per square mile than any other country in the world. We hope, therefore, that religious groups and the Jamaican Diaspora in the UK will see this as an opportunity to go back and visit during the Archbishop’s visit.”

Dr John Sentamu said, “I am looking forward to visiting Jamaica as it celebrates 50 years of independence, and sharing in the celebrations.”
