Dear Keep the Faith,

Temptation follows church leaders

One important fact that Rev Shosanya forgot to mention in his article about the Bishop Eddie Long lawsuit case, is that church leaders, particularly those that are charismatic, are often a magnet for predatory men and women, who want to either seduce them, get money from them, or are just excited to hang out with an individual they perceive to be powerful. When I became a Christian, I was just a regular guy who sat in the pews, soaking up God’s Word.

Bishop Long article balanced

I was glad to read Rev David Shosanya’s perspective on the Bishop Long lawsuit story. It was thoughtful, balanced and reflective. His article was a reminder, that whatever happens in this very sad case, as believers, it’s important we look at this situation through God’s eyes, pray for everyone involved, and recognise that His grace is sufficient to cover whatever sins may have been committed.

Don’t blame the victims

Whenever a minister is caught having affairs with their parishioners and abusing their position of power, the focus is almost always on the minister. He gets the sympathy, even when in the wrong, whilst little thought and compassion is extended to the person with whom he had the affair. The Eddie Long saga has reminded me of the time I was seduced by my pastor. Our relationship only ended when I began seeing someone else. I am ashamed of what I did, but would like my experience to be a warning to others: if you are being tempted by a church leader to enter into an affair, resist, as it only ends in heartache, shame and pain.
