One of the United Sates oldest Black churches just gave a huge donation to Howard University students who were struggling to pay off their tuition.
Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va., paid off the debt of 34 students, which came up to $100,000. The school “chose full-time students with a grade-point average of 2.0 or higher who demonstrated significant financial need,” according to Washington Post.
Church members participated in a 30-day fast that limited their consumption with food, social media and money, and were asked to not make needless purchases. The church told members that the money would go to a charitable cause.
“I thought, ‘What better way to celebrate Black History Month than investing in the young, black heroes of HBCUs?’”
Rev. Marc Lavarin told the Post.
Howard University wasn’t the only Historically Black College and University to receive a donation from Alfred Street Baptist Church. North Carolina’s Bennett College was awarded $50,000. The school was in danger of losing its accreditation and raised more than $8 million to help keep its doors open.
“Now, I can focus on school, my goal is to earn a 4.0 for this semester, and with this gift I can now put all my energy toward that goal and not worry about paying bills to graduate,”
said Perrye Rollins, 22, a Howard University senior, who received $8,000 from the church.
