A massive fire destroyed a West Virginia church early Sunday morning, but firefighters claim they found the Bibles and crosses untouched by the flames.
“Picture this, a building so hot that at one point in time, firefighters had to back out,” the Coal City Fire Department said in a Facebook post:
“In your mind, everything should be burned, ashes. Not a single bible was burned and not a single cross was harmed!!”
The department responded to the structure fire at Freedom Ministries around 1 a.m. Sunday, according to the post which has been shared nearly 40,000 times. None of the firefighters at the scene were injured, the fire department said.
“Though odds were against us, God was not,”
the post said.
Rev. Phil Farrington told the Washington Post he sees it as a sign from God that nearly two dozen Bibles and three crosses survived the flames.
“In the midst of the fire, God’s word will always stand,”
he told the newspaper.
In a Facebook post, the church invited parishioners to an evening service and thanked the community for its outpouring of support.
“We have a heavy heart this morning,” the church wrote. “We will have to rebuild but we will be ok.”
