Chicago Congressman Says Cops Are the ‘Sworn Enemy’ of Black People

Democrat Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush has taken aim at the Chicago police union, calling it “the sworn enemy of black people,” amid escalating tensions surrounding the controversy of prosecutor Kim Foxx and her office’s handling of actor Jussie Smollett’s alleged hate crime hoax, The Chicago Tribune reported.

Foxx came under fire after her office dismissed charges against the actor who was accused of faking a hate crime earlier in the year.

Last week hundreds of protesters gathered outside Foxx’s office calling for her resignation. Among them were members of the police union who were met with counter protesters from the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, Fox News reported.

Rush joined a group of other Foxx supporters including activist Ja’Mal Green, to speak out against the city’s Fraternal Order of Police following the escalating tension.

“The FOP is the sworn enemy of black people, the sworn enemy of black people,”

said Rush, according to The Chicago Tribune.

“The FOP has always taken the position that black people can be shot down in the street by members of the Chicago Police Department, and suffer no consequences,”

he said, adding that Foxx’s battle was “with the FOP and all of their cohorts.”

Responding to the protest actions, Foxx said Saturday that she was afraid.

“I would certainly hope that the FOP and whatever their disagreements may be, whatever concerns that they may have about my ability or leadership, would at least expect the people of their union to not inject racism or white nationalists into the conversation,”

she remarked.

However, in a statement the union said Rush’s comments were “outrageous and irresponsible” and had “demeaned each and every Chicago Police Officer, regardless of their race.”
