Theresa May to quit as Conservative leader on 7 June, paving way for contest to decide a new UK prime minister
In an emotional statement in Downing Street Mrs May said she had “done my best” to honour the EU referendum result.
“It is a matter of deep regret that I have not been able to deliver Brexit.
“My successor will have to find a consensus.
“Consensus will only be possible if those on both sides of the debate ‘compromise’.”
“I know that the Conservative Party can renew itself in the years ahead,” she says.
“I know that we can deliver Brexit.”
