Tory Lanez has been praised by fans for stopping a music video shoot when the director tried to swap a black model with a light-skin woman, and has now called for the entertainment industry to ‘stop devaluing black women’. The LUV singer was busy shooting the visuals for his new single, Good Love featuring Nafe Smallz, this week when the incident took place. In a video clip shared on his own Instagram to highlight the issue, Tory is seen miming along to the song with a dark-skin black model posing nearby. Suddenly, the black model walks off and is replaced with a light-skin woman who takes her spot.

Realising what had happened, a stunned Tory holds his hands up and makes the time-out sign before telling the production crew: ‘No, she’s [the black model] is already here.’ Not wanting to offend her replacement, Tory then touches the light-skin model’s hair and says: ‘You’re beautiful, by the way.’ After reinstating the black woman, Tory shakes his head in disbelief and gestures to his hand alluding to the race issue.

The shoot then continues with the black woman rightfully in her original place. In an inspirational Instagram post, the 26-year-old singer explained how the issue of colourism in the music industry, particularly with women, is prevalent. The singer said: ‘This is an On -Going problem in our community of entertainment that needs to stop . As a black man , Sometimes I’m going to joke about the black community just like we all do. ‘BUT WHAT IM NOT GOING TO DO IS ALLOW ANY OF THESE DIRECTORS TO DE-VALUE OUR BLACK WOMEN … countless times I’ve seen directors swap out our women of color for women of lighter complexion, or women with straighter hair ETC.’

He added: ‘IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS ARTIST TO STAND UP AND NOT LET THIS HAPPEN .. it’s BEEN time to embrace our woman of color #BlackIsBeautiful [sic].’ Relating to the apparent discrimination, one fan praised Tory and said: ‘Tory thank you as a black woman ive seen it like so many women and it’s so disrespectful especially from our brothers!!!’ Thank you!! Much respect for this.’

Noting the reaction from the black model, another chimed in: ‘Her face after really was everything, she was empowered.’ One blamed rappers in the music industry for fuelling the issue of colourism with their choices of models in their videos, adding: ‘A problem that rappers have been co signing forever. Action speaks louder than words. Don’t make it for applause be about it.’
