The Beyond Suffrage programme, which will be free for participants, is being run by the social enterprise Social Practice ENT.
A social enterprise has launched a training programme designed help more young black, Asian and minority ethnic women to become charity trustees.
The Beyond Suffrage programme, run by the charity accounting and consultancy social enterprise Social Practice ENT, is a free 12-week trustee training scheme for women of colour aged 18 to 25.
Applications for the programme will open on 7 October, and will be open to young BAME women who can demonstrate a strong interest in volunteering in the charity sector.
A Social Practice ENT statement announcing the programme said: “Measurable progress on achieving gender equality at board level in the charity sector is being made – however, women of colour continue to be consistently underrepresented at both senior leadership and board level. This applies not only in the voluntary sector, but across all the sectors in the UK.
“The aim of Beyond Suffrage is to accelerate progress to achieve gender equality for women of colour at board level, by adopting a measurable long term strategy that focuses on breaking down barriers and creating an organic pipeline of talented young future leaders.”
After completing their training, participants will be passed on to the company’s recruitment partner, who will help them find places on charity boards, and will continue to receive training and support in their roles.
Programme alumni will then go on to become mentors to future cohorts.
The first cohort of 12 women will be chosen in early December and begin the course in January, with training taking place in London.
Training will be available in other cities for subsequent cohorts, depending on demand, the statement from Social Practice ENT said, and the aim is run the programme until 2030.
Applications close on 9 December at 8am.
