The spread of coronavirus has forced the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a global emergency and pandemic on Wednesday. The virus, which first appeared in China’s Hubei Province, has spread like wildfire to virtually every continent.
Officials are now fighting to contain outbreaks in Italy, South Korea, Iran and the US.
Because scientists are yet to determine how and where the first coronavirus patient was infected, conspiracy theories about the virus’ origin are rife.
Many people online have claimed the virus is the product of an experiment gone wrong in a secret Chinese laboratory.
Some people have also claimed the virus was predicted by psychics and book authors many years before it happened.
Many Christian hardliners, however, believe the coronavirus is a prophetic sign described in the Bible.
Evangelists have claimed the virus is a precursor to the Apocalypse, as revealed in the Book of Revelation.
There are also suggestions prophecies of plague can be found in the Old Testament – passages and scripture penned before the birth of Jesus Christ.
One person said on Twitter: “We living in Old Testament Times.. We are Living in The Old Testament Times.. And that #coronavirus yall look..
“Its a plague from Almighty God.. It’s not from Satan no no.. Its from God himself because God is sick and tired sick and tired!!!!”
Another person said: “By the way, all this Coronavirus thing is managing to convert me into Christianity: I think all the answers are definitely there.
The Wuhan coronavirus is only a small part of the overall picture
Stephen Flurry, Christian evangelist
“I’m gonna start reading the Bible, starting from the Old Testament.”
According to Christian evangelist Stephen Flurry, a prophecy of plague can be found in the Old testaments Book of Zechariah.
Mr Flurry said: “The time frame for this chapter is right before the Messiah’s coming. In the prophecy, four chariots charge right out of God’s throne.”
Zechariah 6 reads: “I looked up again, and there before me were four chariots coming out from between two mountains—mountains of bronze.
“The first chariot had red horses, the second black, 3 the third white, and the fourth dappled—all of them powerful.”
Bible experts believe the chariots, possibly the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, represent different cataclysms that will befall Earth in the end times.
Mr Flurry said: “The Wuhan coronavirus is only a small part of the overall picture. Other plagues are already spreading in cities closer to home.
“These are not dusty old prophecies. They are mostly for our time today.”
Three is, however, no evidence to back the claim the coronavirus is biblical or prophetic in nature.
The coronavirus family has been responsible for epidemics in the past, such as the 2002 to 2003 SARS epidemic in Asia.
The WHO said: “We can channel our concerns into actions to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our communities.
“First and foremost among these actions is regular and thorough hand-washing and good respiratory hygiene.
“Secondly, keep informed and follow the advice of the local health authorities including any restrictions put in place on travel, movement and gatherings.”
