Behind the smile is a memoir. It recounts my early childhood memories through adulthood sharing a series of unfortunate events which led to a life of brokenness and despair. It tells the gripping sides of many real-life stories; stories that enable the reader to confirm but not vilify how choices made out of a broken place lead to more brokenness. But you will also see the power of forgiveness and love a key to being made whole. The book is a testimony of God’s love, grace and mercy.
This book was written in a hope to help those who have found, or still finding, themselves facing similar situations. In this brave and beautiful memoir, written with the raw honesty and openness, I boldly discuss my painful childhood memories which devolved from a safe place into a shocking tale of heartbreaks and abuse—examining why I endured years of physical, mental, financial and emotional pain, and how I eventually broke free from it all.
As painful as it was, I had to allow God to do that open heart surgery on me in order for me to understand that there is a need for us to be healed, not just physically, because “trauma is not what happens to you; trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.”It affects us in many different ways and creeps up in the way we perceive ourselves, those around us, and life. There is a need for us to be made whole before embarking on new friendships and relationships. There is a need for us to know our truest identity and be rooted in it.
The accounts of rejection, loss, suicidal thoughts, depression, sexual and domestic abuse and negative thought patterns makes the book relatable to everyone. Particular emphasis has been given to my subjection to domestic violence/abuse to provide context to and resonate with specific readers. The last two chapters of the booktalkabouthealingandOVERCOMING!They seek to give hope and inspire the reader in knowing that everything we face in life can and will be used by God to set us into our purpose. “Struck down but not destroyed” (as the song goes). Behind the smile is a book about faith, hope, perseverance, wholeness, purpose, and how God changes lives, how He uses our many experiences to mould and shape us.
We are often told that a smile is the best ornament someone can wear but we are rarely aware that it can also hide many painful tales. A smile doesn’t always stand for a perfect life.
This book is a testimony to encourage and inspire others to know that though we may go through the fires of life, those who endure will surely come out refined in their purpose. Never allow your past, your experiences, etc. define you and/or your future. There is hope. There is freedom. There are glimpses of light even in the darkest tunnel.
