Clergy offered time to reflect with bursary awards

Ecclesiastical Insurance has opened its annual Ministry Bursary Awards (MBAs) scheme to support members of the clergy taking sabbatical breaks in 2021.

For over 30 years insurance specialist Ecclesiastical has been offering members of the clergy from Anglican Christian faiths the opportunity to take time for soulful rest and refreshment.

In previous years, members have taken part in a diverse range of projects from ministerial development to pilgrimages, pursuing life-long dreams and other opportunities – receiving grants to support their work.

The awards are open to individual clergy within the Anglican Church in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and all clergy must have been ordained for at least ten years and not taken a sabbatical in the previous seven years of applying.

Michael Angell, Church Operations Director at Ecclesiastical, said:

“At Ecclesiastical we see the amazing contributions that our clergy make to our communities every single day often with a huge amount of personal responsibility – not least during these incredibly challenging times for us all.

“The intention of the Ministry Bursary Awards is to provide members of the clergy with the opportunity to take a sabbatical where they can fulfil long held ambitions or dreams, while reinvigorating themselves.

“We have supported these sabbatical projects and personal development opportunities for members of the clergy for over 30 years now, and it never ceases to amaze me when I see what the funding is used to support and the positive impact it has.”

Reverend James Radcliffe of St Peter in Carlton Church, Lincoln used his Ministry Bursary Award to spend some time working in South Africa alongside Sports Chaplaincy SA.

He said:

“I was given the opportunity during my Extended Study Leave to visit South Africa to learn how churches and Christians are connecting with their communities through sport. I spent time with and interviewed many inspiring Christian men and women in my time out there.

“It helped to rekindle my sense of calling by God.”

All applicants for a 2021 Bursary Award must complete the application forms by 30 September 2020. Judging of the entries will take place in November and the awards made in December.
