Shaun Bailey, Conservative London Mayoral Candidate has hailed places of worship a vital and key part of the community during the pandemic.
The current Mayor Sadiq Khan has called for places of worship to close again as he called a major incident in London.
Places of worship have been critical during the pandemic, providing support for the vulnerable and providing hundreds of meals a day to those who need it the most.
Sadiq Khan has today also increased his share of the council tax by 10% and announced that the 30% increase in congestion charge from £11.50 to £15.00 is set to stay permanently 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.
This is another punitive tax on Londoners forcing them to pay to pray at a time when Londoners are facing uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Shaun Bailey, Conservative Candidate for London Mayor, said:
“Places of worship are vital to communities across London. Yet they’ve been unfairly targeted by Sadiq Khan during the pandemic.
First he extended the congestion charge to weekends, forcing Londoners to pay what is essentially a worship tax. Now he’s demanding that places of worship are shut completely.
Instead of making people’s lives more difficult, Sadiq Khan should focus on supporting Londoners through the pandemic.
He could start by reversing his decision to hike council tax. The last thing Londoners need right now is higher tax. And he should scrap his congestion charge hike — as I will on day one as Mayor.”
