Racism and privilege exist in every society. However, when it comes to American society, the situation is a bit more intense.
Even in the case of adopting a child from a foster home, racism is evident with African American children. Almost 135,000 children are adopted in the US, but ethnic differences are visible in it
See the following illustration representing the foster adoption based on ethnicity.
In fact, social workers are often called to observe the skin color of the newborn child. And, adopting a Black skinned child is cheaper.
Let’s discuss the situation of foster adoption in America.
Adoption Through Foster Care
The adoption of Black children from foster homes is slower than ever. In the previous years, the total percentage of white children waiting for adoption was 44%, and Black children were 22%.
However, 49% of total adoption was of white children, reflecting privilege in another form.
See the following illustration reflecting statistics of adoption.
According to US governmental officials, people are less interested in adopting a Black child. If a White child has to wait 23.5 months to get adopted, a Black child has to wait for 39.4 months.
Waiting List of Foster Adoption
As I have mentioned earlier, the waiting time for African American children is prolonged. But, this is not the only reason that contributes to their waiting.
A study conducted in 1999 before the advent of influential social media supports the existence of racism. People were more interested in adopting a child with Caucasian features and must have light-skinned shade.
A similar study was conducted a decade later, but the results were more or less similar. There were a small proportion of people adopting brown, dark, or very dark-skinned children. White or Irish skin-colored children are still more preferred.
However, it is shocking to know that a White child’s adoption fee is $35,000. On the contrary, you can adopt a Black child only for $18,000.
Light v/s Dark Skin Adoption
In this race of adoption and suffering of Black children, it is not the skin color that contributes. The social workers and privileged foster homes are also taking part in this battle against humanity.
The workers consider this a casual behavior and even mention the skin tone without asking for it. The private agencies even refuse to employ multi-racial employees to maintain the trend of discrimination.
Though, the practice of discrimination is common among a specific set of populations. It is illegal as per the supreme law of the land. The official Code of Ethics for the National Association of Social Workers inhibits private agencies to practice it.
As per the law, social workers do not practice, condone, facilitate or support discriminating factors. Despite the law, see the following adoption rates.
The average age of a kindergartner is between 4 years seven months to 7 years. Even at this stage, the highest adoption rate is of white children. The next bigger group was Hispanic, Asian, multi-racial, and then Black.
See the following illustration reflecting the adoption of a kindergartner.
The thin slice of Black student adoption is an alarming sign. It refers to the decaying condition of society. Even Asian students have a higher share than African Americans.
Adoptive Parents’ Race
The ratio of mothers adopting children from the same race is different. The illustration below displays the women of different races and their adopting practice. It is clearly visible that white women’s adoption is greater than white child adoption. In simple words, more white women are raising non-white children.
Whereas the ratio of Black women is significantly lower than the Black children adoption. Conclusively, white women are accepting children from another ethnicity more in comparison to women from other races.
This is supported by the fact that most white couples prefer to adopt children from other countries. Parents willingly let them adopt because their foster parents are financially strong and can give them a better life.
Regardless of the discriminating behavior that is portrayed in media. There is a light of hope for multi-racial children to get a better environment and rights to live. The ratio of families adopting children from other races varied largely.
The comparison shows the difference in acceptance of multi-racial foster children and their families. 55% of Black adoptees live with a non-Black family, and they are doing well in their lives.
On the contrary to Black children, only 3% of white children were adopted from a mother from another race. Though, the gap in racism and adopting a child is reducing with time. It is not an issue for a non-white person to adopt a white child and vice versa.
The biggest contributor in reducing this gap is the social education like; essay writing service UK and influencers. Many influential personalities like Angelina Jolie are adopting children from other races to make this practice common.
Judicial Verdict on Transracial Adoption
The issue of racial kids being adopted by parents from other races is long being debated and provided essay help. The court has pronounced different verdicts on different cases. However, when non-racial parents get divorced and claim for the custody of Black kid, is the most common one.
In most cases, the court’s decision was solely dependent upon the willingness of a parent to raise a child. Moreover, in rare cases, the Black child’s custody was given to a parent who can provide a secure lifestyle to the child.
The Iowa Supreme Court has marked history by ruling down the verdict of other courts on bi-racial parental custody. The cases like; Kramm v. Kramm, Loving v. Virginia, Beazky v. Davis, and McLaughin v. Florida are the most famous.
Will There Be Multi-racial Families?
Despite the recent condition in the country, the adoption rate is increasing rapidly. Many parents are willing to adopt children from foster homes. These adoptions are also increasing the ratio of multi-racial families.
However, the willingness to adapt and retain the adoption is decreasing with time. Asian children are getting adopted more quickly. And, the graph of African American children is dropping.
Conclusively, the ratio of multi-racial families can increase in the near future, but without any Black child. The condition is shifting gradually, but not for the African Americans.
The alarming rate of decrease in the Black multi-racial families is creating significant problems for the community. It increases the burden on the social working agencies and enforces a change in the attitude of the officials towards Black children.
Wrapping it up
The qualities of human beings are appreciated in all eras, but enforcing this equality was always a strenuous task. The practice of inequality is present even in this advanced era of the 21st century.
From the civil war to date, the struggle of African Americas changes shape but still exists. The adoption rate of Black children across the country is decreasing dramatically.
However, the families are adopting more multi-racial children as per the statistics, but Black’s proportionality is lesser.
Social media and influencers are increasing awareness regarding discrimination. They are also promoting it in one way or other. I hope the statistics that I have mentioned above will support you in understanding the severity of this issue.
