UK gospel legend Dawn Thomas has just released ‘Didn’t It Rain’, the first single from her latest self-titled album which features covers of popular gospel songs.
Released on Zoe Records, the album, produced by Nicky Brown features classic gospel tracks like ‘How I Got Over’, originally recorded by the Clara Ward Singers, ‘God Is Standing By’, and ‘We Are Not Ashamed’ written by Andrae Crouch.
Dawn shared, “This album is a labour of love. I was able to record some of my favourite songs and I chose songs that have encouraged and inspired me over the years. It’s my hope that people enjoy this collection of songs and that they are reminded about the power of faith to strengthen, heal and empower.”
Dawn, an award-winning singer is the daughter of pioneering Pentecostal church leaders who were part of the Windrush Generation.
Her early life in church was filled with music and during her teens she sang in a group alongside her sister and cousins called Trumpets of Zion. The group performed gospel songs and became a sensation in UK churches across the country during the 1980s, in a time described by writer Viv Broughton as the ‘golden age of UK gospel’.
The group folded in the 90s, but Dawn was inspired to become a soloist after attending a church service where she was asked to give an impromptu live performance.
Since going solo Dawn has performed in the US at the Gospel Music Workshop of America the leading conference for gospel music. She has also performed in Europe – including Luxembourg where she recorded a live video – and all over the UK.
