Bible resources for congregations this Christmas
With Christmas fast approaching, Christian charity Lifewords is offering a triple treat to help people access and share the Nativity story. Available free (or for donation), OUTSIDE/IN, Meet the Cast, and The True Light are three resources that welcome people into the story through the Bible’s own words.
OUTSIDE/IN is an illustrated Bible booklet and animation designed to provide more in the area of D/deaf access, for those with learning difficulties, for those with sight loss or visual impairment, and for those who have a lower reading age. Created to help people experience the Bible as good news, it provides a challenge for churches to welcome marginalised people within their own communities.
There are so many for whom the Bible is simply not easily accessible. I’m delighted by Lifewords ambition to work to remove those barriers that
prevent access – be they cost, readability, visuality, understanding, or simply relating to everyday experience. I’m especially glad that we are doing more in the area of D/deaf accessibility, along with other specific areas of need.Liz Heyburn, Lifewords Chair
According to the Ethnologue, in 2014 there were 77,000 people in the UK for whom BSL (British Sign Language) is their first or ‘heart’ language. And the World Federation of the Deaf highlight that there are more than 70 million D/deaf people worldwide with more than 300 different sign languages in use – yet there is currently only one complete sign language translation of the Bible. Lifewords have produced a downloadable animation with BSL signing included, and a new Makaton version will be ready early in December, in time for Christmas services. For those with impaired vision, the larger booklet text is in line with the RNIB’s (Royal National Institute of Blind People) clear print standards, and partnering in the project, Torch Trust has created braille, super-large print, and audio CD versions of the booklet.
At Wave (We’re All Valued Equally) Church in London, people with or without learning disabilities come together to worship. “OUTSIDE/IN is brilliant, I love the booklet. When I first came across it, I was like, ‘Wow, somebody has finally thought about it from a different perspective.’” Bernice Hardie, founder Wave Church
The True Light
Also in the Lifewords seasonal range is The True Light – a booklet and series of online animations inviting people to consider where the ‘True Light’ finds them this
Christmas. Through Scriptures that speak of the moments in the Nativity story where hope meets real lives, it brings the encouragement that whatever the situation we are not to be afraid – the ‘True Light’ is coming!
Meet the Cast
A third treat for Advent is the updated Meet the Cast, a whole family favourite for sharing the Christmas story with friends and family. More vibrant and fun than ever, but still with the same much-loved characters, its new look, larger size, and improved readability is ideal for children’s groups, school events, and family services.
Church leaders, youth leaders, small group leaders, and all those looking for new material to help with the return to physical church this Christmas will find something tasty in this triple treat. In print, in person, and online, Lifewords Bible resources continue to create ways in to the Bible for all.
The resources can be used individually, or to share the story with your church, small group, friends, and neighbours. To order your free (or for donation) printed booklet resources (available in packs of 10), visit www.lifewords.global or call 020 7730 2155.
