Author Pays Tribute To The Strength And Resilience Of Her Mother In New Book Called Overcoming

Jamaican-born author Lesmarie Combrie pays homage to the strength and resilience of her mother Ruth Agatha Lewis in her newly released book Overcoming.

It tells the story of Ruth Lewis’ life  (1932-2011) and how through faith and trust in God she became a Headteacher, employer, proprietor of a basic school, and a pillar in her community.

Lesmarie, a retired nurse who now resides in Birmingham said, “My mum was gratified by her achievements and I am proud and honoured that she was my mother. Everyone thinks that their mother is wonderful and I’m no different. She overcame incredible odds to create a good foundation for her children, and I find it remarkable that in spite of everything she experienced, she kept her faith and trusted God.”

Ruth was born into a family of 15 children, her father was a farmer and lived off the land, and her mother a housewife. However, as a result of being born into such a large family, Ruth was unable to complete her formal education because she had to help her mother with childcare. Ruth herself started having children at an early age and gave birth to nine children – six of whom she raised single-handed.

During her midlife years Ruth opened a nursery, basic/ infant school that catered for nursery age children. The school grew in size and had to move premises to accommodate pupils. It was registered with the Jamaican department of education and provided education to up to 100 children in any given school year.

In spite of her start in life, Ruth, a committed Christian, was an ambitious woman with a passion for life. Her key goals was to see her children get educated and gain employment in a professional job, something she was denied.

Lesmarie was inspired to write a book about her mother after being asked to give a message for a Mother’s Day service at her church in 2019. She recalled, “When I was asked to give a short word I thought it would be good to share a testimony about my mother’s life. She has always been an inspiration to me and I felt the church could learn some insights about motherhood and trusting God during difficult times, by sharing her story.

She added, “I prepared my message, but was then asked to provide different material. As the scripture and the message didn’t seem to “tie in.” So I wasn’t able to share it. I had put in a lot of work in preparing this message, and then thought it would make a great book. I had planned, to write a couple of devotionals, but decided to write a book about my mother instead.”

In order to complete the task of writing Overcoming Lesmarie did a book writing 90-day book challenge.  It took her 12 months to write this book.

The launch will take place on Saturday, March 26.

Lesmarie said, “I really do hope people will be inspired by my mother’s story. Not only did she achieve her dream to make something of her life, all her children completed their education.   One became an international lawyer, and achieved the role of Attorney General. Another became a computing expert and another child became a teacher. My mother’s life highlights that no matter what start an individual has in life, they can overcome and achieve their dreams, goals, and aspirations, with God’s help.”

    I am inspired!

Haven’t even read the book yet!!

To write a book in 90 days alone, then complete in 12 months is a tremendous achievement which shows the same resilience in both mother and daughter.

    Thank you for sharing.
