Spurgeon’s College Hosts The Croydon Division Of The South East London Chamber of Commerce Lunch

Spurgeon’s College, one of the UK’s leading Christian Colleges, and a strategic partner of the South East London Chamber of Commerce (SELCC) was delighted to host the most recent executive lunch with the Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry.

The lunch was a fantastic opportunity to discuss further opportunities for collaboration and partnership between the Borough of Croydon, local businesses and the third sector community. During the lunch, Spurgeon College’s Chair of Governors, Professor Sir Les Ebdon was delighted to share the news with attendees that the College was awarded Full Degree Awarding Powers by the Office for Students (OfS) earlier this year, marking a significant step in the College’s journey towards becoming Croydon’s first home-grown university.

Hosting the event forms part of the College’s commitment to supporting the local community through access to its grounds and facilities. The College is continuing to play an important role in supporting underrepresented groups within Croydon into higher education – with 38% of its student body identifying as Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) – and delivers courses flexibly as weekday, evening or weekend courses in a range of subjects. The decision by the OfS to award Full Degree Awarding Powers will further enable the College to offer higher education opportunities to more people within the Borough.

During the event, attendees heard speeches from Mayor Perry, Prof Sir Les, President of SELCC Helen McIntosh, and Chief Executive at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Richard Burge.

Principal of Spurgeon’s College, Rev Professor Philip McCormack said:

We were delighted to be able to host the Croydon Division of the South East London Chamber of Commerce lunch and discuss new and expanded opportunities for partnership. We were also pleased to be able to highlight the significant news of the College securing degree-awarding powers. This marks a critical step in the College’s journey towards becoming Croydon’s first home-grown university, and we are incredibly proud to have secured approval from the OfS. This decision is the result of many years of hard work at the College to provide high-quality teaching and develop a strong community of students. We’re looking forward to furthering our partnership with SELCC and the fantastic local businesses in Croydon.

SELCC President, Helen McIntosh said:
