World Vision Raises £50,000 to Fight Child Hunger This Christmas
International children’s charity World Vision has this month raised over £50,000 to fight child hunger as a part of The Christmas Challenge from the Big Give. This will provide life-saving food and support to those in need around the world, like Maria in Angola:
I’m very happy! Now, in addition to growing my crops to feed my family, I also have my small job as a cook in the school kitchen. No one needs to sell charcoal to have food anymore; times have changed. Now we want to focus on developing our fields, growing larger crops, and ensuring a better future.
The Christmas Challenge uses match funding to allow supporters of participating charities to have their donations doubled with match funds provided by the charity’s own supporters (pledgers) and Big Give’s Champion partners.
Right now, tens of millions of children are facing malnutrition, starvation and food insecurity. Spiralling food costs, conflict and climate change have reversed decades of progress. Malnutrition stunts development, weakens immune systems, and is linked to nearly half of all preventable deaths in children under five. In a broken, unequal food system, families face impossible choices, often leading to child labour or early marriage. But we know there is enough food for every child to thrive.
World Vision tackles extreme hunger by delivering emergency food aid, treating malnutrition, and supporting long-term food security. As one of UN World Food Programme’s key partners, we help ensure children in the most vulnerable contexts get enough food. Through child nutrition programmes, climate-smart farming, & advocacy, families can build sustainable futures that work towards ending child hunger. In the past decade, 89% of severely malnourished children we treated have made a full recovery.
This comes shortly after Imperial College London’s ICPASS society (Public Awareness & Social Service) marked a decade of support for global hunger by holding their 10th Hunger Challenge, and over 10 years the event has raised over £12,000 for World Vision’s hunger response work worldwide.
