Imagine growing up never receiving any hugs or kisses, or being told “I love you”.
You never saw your parents display any love or affection towards each other.
As a young child, the lack of love within your home may have caused you to supress your true emotions, to lack the ability to give or receive love in a healthy manner, and to develop a healthy relationship with your Self.
As you grow up, you may seek love outside of the home in the form of promiscuity, gang life, drug dependency, or other self-harming ways.
You may have even been raised in a religious environment that spoke of God’s unconditional Love, yet still, you failed to experience this kind of love from your parents, because they themselves didn’t experience it.
You don’t realize that the root cause of your issues as an adult is a Self Love Deficit. You weren’t taught how to love yourself, let alone how to love others.
You were taught to put others first, to put God first, and to put your own needs last. So slowly, your cup became empty as you poured into other people’s lives, without giving to yourself.
If (like myself) you can identify with the above story, the journey to Self Love may be a long and tedious one. You’re going to have to fill your meter from a Self Love Deficit, to filling your Self with Love. Where would you say you are right now on that meter? (I’d say I’m about half way)
True Love is unconditional.
Do you love yourself unconditionally? If not, how can you expect others to? When you give unconditional love to yourself, it will be reflected back to you.
I wish I’d known this years ago. Instead, I hated myself; I hated my looks, I hated my hair, I hated my skin, I hated my nose, I hated everything about me (apart from my teeth).
But I loved God.
How can I say I loved God when I didn’t love myself?
I wasn’t taught to recognize God within, I was taught to think of God as being outside of myself, somewhere beyond the clouds.
To truly put God first, is to recognize God within. When I say ‘God’, I’m referring to the Source of Love.
Yes, your Source of Love is within.
