Dreams, revelations & moments: The return of Pastor William McDowell

Akosua DF explores the impact of pastor and worship leader William McDowell, who has just released his latest album after a seven-year hiatus

In February 2009, a shift occurred in the landscape of modern worship. Pastor William McDowell’s breakout single, ‘I Give Myself Away’, gave congregations worldwide a simple yet radical anthem of complete surrender.

The song’s power lay in its vulnerability, inviting deep personal reflection, and compelling listeners to pause and evaluate the true condition of their hearts. McDowell’s anthem was more than a spiritual reset; it was a global phenomenon. Beyond serving as a clarion call drawing believers back to a posture of sanctification and consecration, the song also raced to the top of Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs Chart, quickly cementing its place as one of the most recognised worship songs of the modern era.

Unknown to the world, this was just the first wave of a tsunami of Spirit-fuelled worship songs and albums from McDowell. With each release, the clarion call resounded even louder. The 2011 album, Arise: The Live Worship Experience, centred on taking a stand of unwavering faith and boldly stepping into spiritual breakthrough and authority. ‘Withholding Nothing’ in 2013 admonished us to live in unreserved devotion and total abandon to God.

Desiring the outpouring of the Holy Spirit was the core message of Sounds of Revival (2016), but that wasn’t enough – in 2017, McDowell challenged us to press deeper with Sounds of Revival II: Deeper. The journey continued with the 2019 release, The Cry, showcasing the Bride of Christ groaning desperately for a move of God.

After The Cry it would be seven years before McDowell blessed the world with another musical offering. The hiatus marked his unofficial retirement from the gospel music industry, with a renewed focus to prioritise his local church and protect the sacredness of his altar.

The fruit of that season of yielding to the Lord is evident in his latest project, Dreams, Revelations & Moments. The 18-track album represents an evolution in McDowell’s sound and approach to putting together an album. Unlike previous projects, Dreams, Revelations & Moments wasn’t recorded during a pre-planned live session; instead, a carefully curated tapestry of songs was captured over a three-year period, seamlessly woven together by the Holy Spirit. As the title suggests, the album’s tracks were birthed from dreams, revelations, and unscripted moments of worship, which were captured across three continents.

The album opens with a rich, modern orchestral interlude, inviting listeners ‘Into His Courts’. This overture then transitions into praise with bursts of joy. The project seamlessly shifts from high-energy praise to intimate moments interconnected by lingering interludes, catapulting the listener into deeper dimensions of devotion and worship.

While there are several standout tracks on the project, ‘He’s as Close’ seems to have particularly resonated with McDowell’s 500,000-strong Instagram following. After sharing that the song was an unplanned moment, fans were delighted to learn that a full-length video on YouTube would follow. The gentle refrain, ‘Jesus’, serves as a reminder that ‘He’s the reason we have gathered …. He’s the object of our praise.’

The collaborations on Dreams, Revelations & Moments showcase a variety of modern voices. While Western vocalists – like Daniel Johnson, Melvin Crispell III, Chris Lawson, amongst others – deliver their signature sounds, the inclusion of African gospel powerhouses –Nathaniel Bassey, Dunsin Oyekan, Joe Mettle, Sunmisola Agbebi, and Ntokozo Mbambo –highlights William McDowell’s deep appreciation for African psalmistry. McDowell frequently refers to Bassey as his “covenant brother” and openly credits all five featured African ministers as vital influences during his personal times of worship. Gospel music from the African continent has in recent times established a prominent presence on the world stage. African worship leaders are no longer merely contributing to global gospel music; they are redefining its trajectory through spiritual depth and musical excellence. The sound coming out of Africa today is calling millions back to prayer, devotion and reverence – proving that when authentic worship rises from the motherland, the entire world stops to listen.

It feels deeply intuitive that McDowell concludes the album journey with ‘The Maranatha Song’. A gentle yet poignant reminder of the Church’s anticipation of Christ’s return, the final track anchors the entire listening experience in quiet hope.

William McDowell’s Dreams, Revelations & Moments is one of those rare projects with no skippable song, as each helps weave the overarching journey together. In McDowell’s words, each song is a piece of a puzzle which the Lord put together. Simply put, Dreams, Revelations & Moments isn’t just a collection of songs; it is a continuous, unbroken worship experience that draws you into a place of deep reflection and devotion. With the recurring central theme ‘Jesus’, the heart behind this project reverberates loudly: to help listeners refocus their attention on Jesus and allow Him to take His rightful place on the throne of their hearts. When all is said and done, may the quiet cry of our hearts remain simple: ‘I just want Jesus.’
